GLIDDEN -- The Lake Superior Sea Dogs opened their season with a 9-6 victory in an Upper 13 League baseball game here on Sunday.
Winning pitcher Jake Lewis (1-0, 1.29 ERA) struck out 17 in seven innings. He allowed one run on five hits and two walks.
Lake Superior scored six runs in the top of the eighth for a 9-1 lead. The Sea Dogs had six hits in the inning, including a two-run single by Ian Bergstrom and a two-run double by Corbin Taylor.
Glidden scored five runs on one hit, six walks, and one hit batsman off two relievers in the eighth for a 9-6 score.
Reliever Anthony Bush entered in the ninth inning and recorded a save by retiring the Orioles in order on two ground outs and a fly out.
Lake Superior had 14 hits. Eric Hinnenkamp led with three hits in five at bats. He scored a run and had an RBI. Taavi Mattson, Alex Busick, Bergstrom, and Nik Mattson had two hits apiece. Bergstrom had three RBI.
Corey Hegstrom batted two-for-four with two RBI for Gildden.
Losing pitcher Brett Hulmer allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and six walks with one strikeout in seven and two-thirds innings.
Glidden is now 2-1 in the Upper 13 League.
Lake Superior is 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Upper 13 League. The Sea Dogs are next in action on Saturday, June 10, for a 1:30 p.m. non-league tilt vs. Hibbing at Morrie Arnovich Field in Superior.
