OSCEOLA, Wis. -- The Duluth Padres lost 5-1 to the Beef River Bullfrogs in the first round of the 65th annual Wisconsin Baseball Association Playoffs on Sat., Aug. 10 at Oakey Park in Osceola. Beef River broke a 1-1 tie with four runs, all with two outs, in the top of the seventh inning.

 

Beef River got on the scoreboard first, with a run in the third inning. Nolan Fadness was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and he advanced to second on a groundout. Will Fadness singled with two outs to plate Nolan Fadness. Duluth tied the score in the fourth when Nick Moran hit a double over first base and scored on Bob Baxton's RBI single.

 

With two outs in the seventh, Duluth starter Jesse Olson walked two batters and was lifted for reliever Jake Lewis. Lewis walked Nolan Fadness to load the bases. Nate Sorenson hit an RBI single for the go-ahead run. Then two runs scored on the same play -- a passed ball and an error. Todd Lasher added an RBI single scoring Sorenson for the 5-1 margin.

 

Winning pitcher Zach Lasher had 12 strikeouts in a complete game effort. He allowed one run on six hits and two walks in nine innings. Olson allowed three runs on four hits, two walks, and a hit batsman in six-and-two-thirds innings. Lewis allowed two runs on two hits and one walk with two strikeouts in two-and-one-third innings.

 

Todd Lasher had two hits for Beef River. Greg Schullo had two hits for Duluth, which ended the season with 11 wins and 14 losses (9-3 in the Upper 13 League).

 

Beef River will play against Osceola on Sun., Aug. 11 at Osceola.
