SUPERIOR -- The Tony Hayshakers defeated the Lake Superior Sea Dogs, 5-4, in an Upper 13 League baseball game at Morrie Arnovich Field on Sunday.
Winning pitcher Huston Dennis allowed three runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in six innings. Bryce Meverden allowed one run on two hits and a walk with four strikeouts in three innings of relief for the save.
Tony scored three runs in the third inning on two hits, two walks, two wild pitches, and a Sea Dogs error for a 3-0 lead. Tru Dupee had an RBI single in the inning.
Lake Superior tallied a run in the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice ground out by Ethan Raye.
Meverden's RBI single plated Brandon Walters for the go-ahead run for Tony in the seventh. The Hayshakers added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single by Payton Wiemer.
Down 5-3, the Sea Dogs had runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the ninth but only managed one run, on a wild pitch, as Meverden got two strikeouts and a ground out to end the game.
Walters, Dupee, and Kevin Brockman had two hits apiece for Tony.
Austin Parrott was 3-for-4 to lead Lake Superior.
Losing pitcher Conner Fonger allowed four earned runs on nine hits and four walks in eight innings. He had 13 strikeouts.
Tony is now 5-0 in Upper 13 League games.
Lake Superior, which lost a non-league game at Hibbing on Saturday, falls to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Upper 13 League. The Sea Dogs are next in action at Grand View on Sunday, June 28, for a league contest.
