WASHBURN -- The Lake Superior Sea Dogs defeated the Washburn Lumberjacks, 14-6, in an Upper 13 League baseball game here on Sunday. Trailing 6-3, Lake Superior scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take the lead.
Winning pitcher Mitch Kruger worked four innings of shutout relief. He allowed one hit and two walks and had four strikeouts. Starter Isaac Fugere allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and six walks with three strikeouts in four innings. Tim Pokornowski pitched a scoreless ninth.
Bryce Huffman and Nick Baker had four hits apiece to pace Lake Superior's 17-hit attack off four Washburn hurlers. Huffman was 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs, and four RBI. Baker was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs, and two RBI.
Blaise Sopiwnik led Washburn with two hits in four at bats and a run scored. Washburn's Hunter Gustafson hit a two-run double in the fourth to put the home team ahead, 6-3.
Washburn took a two-run lead in the first on four walks and an error.
Lake Superior tied the score in the second on four consecutive hits, including an RBI single by Pokornowski.
Baker's RBI double plated Austin Thompson for a 3-2 lead for the visitors in the third.
Washburn took the lead with four runs in the fourth. Scott Morland and John Sopiwnik hit RBI singles before Gustafson's big hit.
Lake Superior sent eight batters to the plate and scored all seven runs—on five hits and three walks—before an out was recorded in the fifth. Pokornowski capped the scoring with a three-run homer.
The Sea Dogs added solo insurance runs in the sixth and seventh on sacrifice flies by Huffman and Carson Wenger, respectively.
Huffman's two-run four-bagger in the eighth ended the scoring.
Washburn starting pitcher John Sopiwnik allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks in four innings. He had one strikeout. Bo Bratley was the losing pitcher. He allowed six runs on five hits and three walks in the fifth.
Lake Superior improves to 4-1 in league play and Washburn drops to 3-1.
