GURNEY -- The Lake Superior Sea Dogs defeated the Hurley Timberjaxx, 14-1, in an Upper 13 League baseball game here on Sunday. The game was called after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
Pitchers Jake Lewis, Mitch Kruger, and Zach Gunderson combined on a one-hitter. Lewis started and earned the win. He allowed one unearned run on one hit and one walk in four innings; he struck out seven. Kruger allowed one base runner, on a walk, in two innings and Gunderson tossed a perfect seventh.
Cooper Grashorn, Kevin Hendrickx, and Bellin hit consecutive singles to lead off the first, with Grashorn scoring on Bellin's hit, before Atiemo's first homer that capped off a four-run first frame. Atiemo's second round-tripper accounted for three of the four runs in the second inning for an 8-0 lead.
Hurley's Aaron Froelich singled to lead off the bottom of the second. He advanced to third when Dylan Smith reached on an error and scored on Cole Kivisto's sacrifice fly.
Grashorn and Hendrickx drew back-to-back walks to lead off the fourth. Bellin's RBI double plated Grashorn. With first base open, Hurley elected to intentionally walk Atiemo. Anderson responded by clearning the bases on his big fly.
Isaac Fugere capped the scoring in the sixth when he led off with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Grashorn, Hendrickx, and Atiemo scored three runs each, while Bellin scored twice. Matt Solberg batted 2-for-4 with a run.
Losing pitcher David Dibble allowed eight runs (four earned) on six hits, a walk, and hit batsman in two innings. He had two strikeouts.
Lake Superior improved to 2-1 in league play and Hurley dropped to 0-2.
