MELLEN -- The Lake Superior Sea Dogs defeated the Mellen Miners, 9-3, in an Upper 13 League amateur baseball game here on Sunday. The game was called in the middle of the seventh inning due to a rainstorm.
Tim Pokornowski gave the Sea Dogs a lead with a two-run single in the top of the first inning. Mellen tied the score with single runs in the first and third innings. In the fourth, Nick Baker's RBI single plated Cooper Grashorn, and Kevin Hendrickx also scored on the play when an error occurred in the outfield. Lake Superior added three runs in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Hendrickx, an RBI double by Kyle Bellin, and an RBI triple by Baker.
Mellen answered with one run in the bottom of the sixth.
Zach Gunderson led off the seventh with a double, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Peter Atiemo. Atiemo reached on an error on the play and was lifted for Matt Solberg, who eventually scored the game's final run on a wild pitch.
Rain fell for the last few innings of the game and the game was called when the skies opened up during the seventh inning stretch.
Winning pitcher Mitch Kruger worked three innings in relief of starter Jesse Olson. Kruger allowed one run (unearned) on zero hits and five walks in three innings. He had six strikeouts. Olson allowed two run on four hits and three walks in three innings. He had one strikeout.
Grashorn was 1-for-3 with three runs, Hendrickx drew three walks and scored twice, Pokornowski was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, and Baker was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.
Lake Superior improved to 1-1 in the Upper 13 League. Mellen is now 0-2 in league play.
