SUPERIOR -- The Ashland Merchants defeated the Lake Superior Sea Dogs, 14-11, in an Upper 13 League baseball game at Morrie Arnovich Field on Sunday. Ashland scored seven runs in the seventh inning to erase Lake Superior's 8-2 lead. The Sea Dogs jumped ahead, 11-9, with a three-run eighth, but could not hang on as Ashland rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth to seal the victory.
Matt Tarasewicz, Taylor Stibbe, Tim King, and Bobby Tyndall had two hits apiece for the winners.
Kyle Bellin and Michael Karp had three hits, and Kevin Hendrickx, Bryce Huffman], Seth Anderson, Peter Atiemo, and Jesse Olson had two hits each for Lake Superior. Huffman had two double and three RBI, and Hendrickx and Atiemo each had two RBI.
Tyndall, the winning pitcher, worked all nine innings. He allowed 11 runs, all earned, on 17 hits, one walk, and two hit batsmen. He had eight strikeouts.
Anderson picked up the loss in relief of starter Jake Lewis, who allowed three earned runs in six and one-third innings. Anderson allowed three runs on two hits and two walks in an inning and a third.
Ashland finishes the Upper 13 League season with a record of 8-2, which clinches the league championship. Lake Superior finishes at 7-3. Both teams will likely qualify for the 32-team Wisconsin Baseball Association (WBA) Playoffs, to be held on August 9-11 and 16-18.
