The Exeland Braves spoiled the Duluth Padres' first game played at Wade Stadium by winning the non-league game, 10-1. Winning pitcher Jake Herbst threw a two-hitter and had 17 strikeouts.

 

Herbst, from Park Falls, Wis., was 9-1 with a 3.07 ERA as a senior for UW-Stevens Point in 2013. He led the Pointers, who competed in the NCAA Div. III College World Series, in wins, innings pitched (82.0) and strikeouts (72).

 

Alex Pitroski had three hits and Adam Leonhard had three RBIs for Exeland. Herbst and Sam Zielke had two hits apiece, and Herbst had two RBIs. Exeland put the game out of reach by scoring five runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-1 lead.

 

Matt Chruscielski led off the fifth inning with a single, and Ryan McCarthy singled with one out in the ninth for Duluth's hits.

 

Losing pitcher Jesse Olson allowed two earned runs on six hits and one walk in five innings. He had five strikeouts. Harley Hazel threw three-and-one-third innings of effective relief by allowing one run on three hits and three walks with one strikeout.

 

Duluth is now 5-5 overall (3-0 in Upper 13 League). The Padres host the Ashland Merchants today at Duluth East High School field in an Upper 13 League game, at 1:30 p.m.
