ASHLAND -- The Duluth Padres defeated the Ashland Merchants, 7-5, in the first game of an Upper 13 League doubleheader at James Pufall Field in Ashland. Ashland won the second game, 13-3 in five innings, to take the season series two games to one.

Duluth scored seven unanswered runs to erase Ashland's 5-0 lead to win the first game. The Padres scored four runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh. Tim Nylund, Nick Moran, Ryan McCarthy, Bob Baxton, and Mike Lewis connected for singles in the sixth. McCarthy and Baxton had RBIs, and Lewis knocked in two runs. In the seventh, Greg Schullo singled with one out and stole second and third base on consecutive pitches. Schullo scored the tying run on Nylund's RBI single. Nylund advanced to third base on Moran's double, and scored on a throwing error on the play for the go-ahead run. Moran scored on a fielder's choice error for an insurance run.

Jesse Olson picked up the win by pitching one-and-two-thirds shutout innings in relief. Olson entered with two runners on base and one out in the sixth as he replaced reliever Kevin Hendrickx. He retired two batters in a row to retire the side. In the seventh, he worked out of a bases-loaded jam to secure the win. Olson allowed two hits and one walk with no strikeouts. Hendrickx allowed a hit and a walk in one-third of an inning. Starter Anthony Bush allowed five runs on nine hits and no walks with six strikeouts in five innings.

Ashland scored three runs in the first inning on four hits. Taylor Stibbe and Tyler Martin added solo home runs in the third and fourth innings respectively. Losing pitcher Bob Tyndall allowed six earned runs on 11 hits and no walks in seven innings.

In the second game, Ashland used an eight-run third inning to cruise to a victory in a game shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule. The Merchants pounded out 15 hits in four innings. Winning pitcher Jacob Tomlinson allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in four innings. Olson was the losing pitcher. Nylund hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, the first home run for the Padres since Matt Chruscielski went deep at Oulu in 2009.

Duluth is now 5-2 in league and 7-12 overall. Ashland is 7-3 in league and 8-3 overall.
