DULUTH -- The Duluth Padres defeated the Ashland Lumberjacks, 2-1, in the final Upper 13 League game of the season for both teams on Saturday at Wade Stadium. Greg Schullo singled to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning and subsequently stole second base, third base, and home for the go-ahead run. Winning pitcher Jesse Olson (3-6, 4.87 ERA) allowed one run on three hits and one walk in six innings in relief of starter Anthony Bush. Olson had five strikeouts.

 

Duluth went ahead 1-0 on an RBI single by Nick Moran in the fourth inning, scoring Kevin Hendrickx. Ryan Johnson's RBI single scored CJ Smith in the sixth inning for Ashland's run.

 

Bush worked three shutout innings with three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Logan Schuman picked up the loss. He allowed two runs on nine hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen in seven innings. Smith replaced Schuman after Schullo's single in the eighth.

 

Bob Baxton and Hendrickx had two hits apiece for Duluth. Dan Romano had two hits for Ashland. Schullo had four stolen bases and Duluth's Tim Nylund stole three bases.

 

Duluth finished the Upper 13 League schedule with a 9-3 record (11-13 overall). Ashland ended their league schedule with a 6-6 record. Both teams, along with the Ashland Merchants, will await the results of the Wisconsin Baseball Association's playoffs seeding meeting. Semifinals for the 65th annual WBA Playoffs will be held at Altoona, Coon Valley, Osceola, and Rib Lake on Aug. 9, 10, and 11. Osceola will host the finals on Aug. 16, 17, and 18.
