The Padres won their Upper 13 League season opener at Marenisco, Michigan, in 11 innings on Sunday, May 26. Nick Moran scored in the top of the 11th on Harley Hazel's RBI reach on error and Anthony Bush worked out of a jam with runners on 2nd & 3rd in the bottom of the 11th to hang on for the win.



Bush (1-1, 3.55 ERA) pitched 4.2 innings in relief of starter Jesse Olson. Bush allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Olson allowed one earned run on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

 

Marenisco's Cody Kurta tied the game 4-4 on a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the 9th.

 

Olson left with one out in the 7th with the game tied 2-2. Duluth scored one run in the eighth and one run in the ninth for a 4-2 lead before Kurta's dramatic blast over the 380' sign in center field on a 1-2 count after fouling off multiple pitches.

 

Kurta and Tim Rutheaux had two hits apiece and Cody Mahler hit a solo home run for Marenisco.

 

Rutheaux pitched the first nine innings for Marenisco and allowed one earned run on seven hits and five walks with eight strikeouts. Reliever Robert Brunelle was the losing pitcher. He allowed one run on no hits and four walks with no strikeouts in two innings.

 

Moran had two hits, scored twice, and had an RBI. Mike Lewis had two hits for Duluth, 1-0 in the Upper 13 League and 1-3 overall.
