HAUGEN, Wis. -- Brad Schank's RBI single down the third base line plated Alex Byom from second base for the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as Whitehall defeated Duluth-Superior, 4-3, in the WBA Playoffs on Saturday, August 13.

Whitehall scored three runs in the bottom of the first for a 3-0 lead. Duluth-Superior scored two runs in the third when Kevin Hendrickx scored on an error and Evan Scherber scored on Jimmy Merling's RBI single.

The Dukes tied the score in the fourth when Bob Baxton scored on Peyton Flanders' sacrifice fly.

Losing pitcher Jake Lewis (5-5 W-L, 2.99 ERA) worked all 8 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs on 11 hits and seven walks. He had three strikeouts.

Byom earned the win in relief of starter Scott Hovell. Byom threw two shutout innings with three strikeouts. Hovell allowed two earned runs on four hits and seven walks with four strikeouts.

Byom and Hovell had three hits apiece, and Trent Pendrasek had two hits for Whitehall.

Hendrickx had three of Duluth-Superior's five hits.

Whitehall advances to play on Sunday against the winner of the Hayward vs. Osceola game.

The Dukes conclude their season with an overall record of 11-13. They were 8-4 in the Upper 13 League and qualified for the WBA Playoffs for the fifth consecutive season and sixth time overall in their 10-year existence.
