Bryce Oslin shut down his hometown team for seven innings of no-hit, no-run pitching as the Duluth-Superior Dukes won their season opener over the Mora Blue Devils, 4-1, at Mora on Saturday, May 14. Oslin had 12 strikeouts.

The Dukes started their season off with a three-run first inning. Jon Soto led off with a single, Zach Veno walked, and Jimmy Merling singled to load the bases with no outs. Travis Bartlett then hit a two-run single, scoring Soto and Veno. Peter Atiemo then hit an RBI groundout, scoring Merling.

Duluth-Superior got another run in the third when Merling walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on Atiemo's RBI single.

Oslin (1-0 W-L, 0.00 ERA) struck out the side in the first and third innings.

The Blue Devils threatened with one out in the fifth when they had two runners on base due to walks, but a caught-stealing play and a groundout killed the rally. Mora's seventh inning also looked like trouble brewing as the first two batters reached base on a walk and a fielder's choice. But they only got as far as second and third as Oslin finished his day by retiring the next three batters.

Michael Gales relieved Oslin in the eighth. He kept the shutout and no-hitter alive with only one out to go in the bottom of the ninth, but with two runners on base via walks he surrendered an RBI single to Matt VanSomeren that scored Dylan Graves and put runners on the corners and brought the tying run to the plate.

Acting Manager Bartlett then called on Billy Chapel to relieve Gales. Chapel induced a high-bouncing come-backer that he snared and tossed to Mike Lewis at first base to secure the victory.

Kevin Hendrickx had two hits for the Dukes. Merling scored two runs, and Bartlett and Atiemo had two RBI apiece.

Duluth-Superior's pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts.

Losing pitcher Asa Patterson allowed four runs on five hits and four walks in five innings. He had three strikeouts. VanSomeren allowed two hits and a walk and had five strikeouts in four innings of shutout relief.

The Dukes are back in action on Saturday, May 15, at 1:00 p.m. in a non-league game at Cumberland.
