HINCKLEY, Minn. -- The Duluth-Superior Dukes dropped their season opener, a non-league amateur baseball game, to the Hinckley Knights, 11-4, at Brennan Field in Hinckley on Saturday night.

Hinckley stormed ahead with a five-run second inning on four hits, one walk, and one Dukes error. Travis Bartlett scored the Dukes' first run of the season in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jesse Olson. Hinckley increased its lead to 7-1 with two runs in the fourth. Duluth-Superior scored two runs in the seventh, on an RBI fielder's choice by Cody Kurta and a sacrifice fly by Bartlett, and Kevin Hendrickx scored on an error in the eighth to bring the score to 7-4, but Hinckley scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth on four hits and one Dukes error to bring the score to its final tally.

Truett Kroschel earned the win in relief of starter Josh Thom. Kroschel allowed three runs (all unearned) on two hits and three walks in four and two-thirds innings. He had four strikeouts. Thom pitched three and one-third innings and allowed one run on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Josh Norby pitched a scoreless ninth with two hits and three strikeouts.

Alex Hagman, Kevin McFerran, and Tom Miller had two hits apiece for the Knights. Miller and R.J. Keur had two RBIs each.

The Dukes were led by Kurta, who was 3-for-5 with an RBI. He got the team's first hit of the season, a single to lead off the second inning. The Dukes had 12 left on base for the game, including leaving the bases loaded in both the third and fourth innings.

Losing pitcher Bryce Oslin allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts in four innings. Olson went four innings in relief and allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks. With three strikeouts, Olson became the second pitcher to record 100 career strikeouts for the club, which began as the Proctor Padres in 2007. He now has 101 and is in second place behind Anthony Bush's 287. Olson is in his fourth season with the club.

Duluth-Superior travels to Spooner on Saturday to take on the Cardinals in another non-league game.
