DULUTH -- The Duluth-Superior Dukes clinched the Upper 13 League championship as they defeated the Washburn Lumberjacks, 4-0, in the first game of a league amateur baseball doubleheader at Bulldog Park on Sunday.

Winning pitcher Jake Lewis (2-1 W-L, 2.25 ERA) tossed a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts. He allowed three walks.

The Dukes' Mike Lewis scored on an error in the second inning for the only run that was needed, and Cody Dolsen cleared the bases with a three-run double in the sixth.

Mike Lewis was 1-for-2 with two runs, and Bob Baxton and Travis Bartlett had two hits apiece for Duluth-Superior.

Dave Barningham was the losing pitcher. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks in six innings; he had two strikeouts.

While the Duluth-Superior club has qualified for the Wisconsin Baseball Association (WBA) Playoffs in 2008, 2012, 2013, and 2014, this is its first league title. The club is in its ninth season, having started as the Proctor Padres in 2007. A move to UMD in 2010 prompted a name change to the Duluth Padres, and the team became the Duluth Dukes in 2014. Another name change came in 2015, as "Duluth-Superior Dukes" was chosen to reflect the club's regional representation, its nine-year Upper 13 League and WBA affiliations, and as a nod to the area's professional baseball history (The "Duluth Dukes" name dates back to 1935 in the Northern League, and "Duluth-Superior Dukes" was used twice: 1960-1970, and 1993-2002). The club splits its home games between Bulldog Park and Superior's Morrie Arnovich Memorial Field.

The Upper 13 League was established in 1948.
