DULUTH -- The Washburn Lumberjacks defeated the Duluth-Superior Dukes, 5-1, in the second game of an Upper 13 League doubleheader at Bulldog Park on Sunday.

Winning pitcher John Sopiwnik allowed one run on six hits and five walks with six strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings. Reliever C.J. Smith got the save as he got a strikeout on the only batter he faced in the bottom of the seventh. Smith came on to pitch with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate.

Washburn scored two runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. The Lumberjacks' Matt Deragger was 3-for-4, and Dave Barningham, Smith, and Blaise Sopiwnik each had two hits.

Evan Scherber had two hits for Duluth-Superior.

Losing pitcher Bryce Oslin (0-2 W-L, 6.23 ERA) allowed three earned runs on six hits and one walk in four and one-third innings pitched. He had nine strikeouts.

Washburn concluded its league schedule with a 7-5 record. Duluth-Superior, 9-1 in league play, has a doubleheader against the Chequamegon Cardinals at Park Falls on July 26 to wrap up its league schedule. The Dukes, 11-6 overall, host the Spooner Cardinals on July 24 at 7:30 p.m., and the Hibbing Miners on July 25 at 1:00 p.m. Both non-league games will be played at Morrie Arnovich Memorial Field in Superior.
