PADRES WIN SEASON OPENER

DULUTH -- Corey Pavlich hit a two-run go-ahead single in the top of the ninth inning as the Proctor Padres won their season opener for the first time in the club's four-year history, defeating the UMD Club 8-6 in a non-league game at the Lake Park Athletic Complex. The UMD Club had scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the score, erasing the lead Proctor had since the second inning.

Kevin Schubert, making his debut for the Padres and celebrating his birthday, earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning. Schubert relieved Bob Baxton in the eighth inning in a save situation but allowed an inherited runner to score on a bases-loaded walk to tie the game. Proctor's starting pitcher Anthony Bush pitched five innings and allowed two unearned runs on six hits and one walk. Bush had eight strikeouts.

Pavlich had three runs scored, three hits and three RBIs to lead Proctor. Kyle Cotrell and Charlie Habermann added two hits apiece. Habermann was also playing in his first amateur game.

Bush, Baxton and Schubert combined for 15 strikeouts, a new club record. The previous mark of 11 was last achieved on June 7, 2009, against Port Wing. The Padres also set a new club record for at bats, with 39. The previous mark of 38 was last achieved on June 13, 2009, against Hibbing.

James Ostrander singled in the first inning. He has now hit safely in eight straight games, dating back to July 11, 2009.

The Padres will next be in action on May 2 when they travel to Brill to take on their 2008 WBA Playoffs opponent.
