News '09: Ashland Merchants 7, Proctor 2

July 12, 2009

PROCTOR -- The Ashland Merchants defeated the Proctor Padres in an Upper 13 League baseball game. Four of Ashland's seven runs were unearned as Proctor committed four errors, three of which came in Ashland's four-run fifth inning.

Losing pitcher James Ostrander allowed two earned runs on nine hits and one walk in five innings. He did not record any strikeouts. Anthony Bush allowed one run on four hits and no walks in four innings of relief. Bush had one strikeout.

Proctor scored two runs in the sixth inning. Bush led off with a walk and scored on Scott Lustig's RBI triple.  Lustig, a track and field runner for Minnesota State Mankato, circled the bases on the play on an errant relay throw by the shortstop. The Padres had their chances of closing the scoring gap dashed when two runners were tagged out at the plate later in the sixth inning.

Proctor had six hits, all from different batters. Corey Pavlich and Jake Rausch hit doubles.

Ashland is now 6-5 in league play. Proctor falls to 0-10. They have two league games remaining, both are away games.

The Padres will host the Hibbing Miners on Tues., July 14 at 7:30 p.m. in a non-league game. It will be their first night game of the season, and second-to-last home game.

PADRES NOTES:  Anthony Bush surpassed his own single-season team record on Sunday. He has pitched 59.2 innings this season. He set the team record of 59.0 in 2008... Kyle Cotrell has tied [Nathan Bush]'s single-season team record for reaching base via base on balls. Bush walked 14 times in 2007.
