News '09: Hibbing Hull-Rust Tournament

BEMIDJI 9, PROCTOR 6

Sun., June 21, 2009

HIBBING, Minn. -- The Bemidji Blue Ox defeated Proctor in the losers bracket of the Hull Rust Tournament, and will face Warroad in the consolation championship game. Proctor joins host team Hibbing as the two teams to be eliminated from the tournament without a win.

Bemidji took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on a pair of Padres errors. Proctor answered with one run in the top of the second inning: Kyle Cotrell led off by reaching on an error, moved to second base on a throwing error, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by James Ostrander and scored on an RBI groundout by Jake Rausch.

Proctor took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the third inning. Anthony Bush led off with a walk, Scott Lustig singled, Corey Pavlich advanced both runners one base with a sacrifice bunt, and Dan Solarz plated both with a two-run double. Solarz later moved to third base and scored on a pair of wild pitches. Chris Musolf walked, Cotrell singled and Ostrander walked, chasing Bemidji's starting pitcher, but Proctor left the bases loaded as the next two batters were retired.

Bemidji finally figured out Ostrander, Proctor's starting pitcher, as they scored three runs on four hits in the third inning and three runs on four hits and one error in the fourth inning. The Blue Ox scored an insurance run in the sixth inning to up their lead to 9-4.

Proctor did not go down without a fight. Pavlich led off the top of the seventh with a single and [Chris Musolf] hit a two-run home run to bring the score to 9-6. Despite a single by Cotrell, Proctor was unable to muster any more fire power.

Losing pitcher James Ostrander, a 2009 PHS graduate, was making his first pitching start for the Padres. He threw a complete game and allowed six earned runs on 12 hits. He had one strikeout and did not walk a batter.

Solarz had two hits including a double, two RBIs and a stolen base. Cotrell had three hits.

Proctor is next in action on Thursday, June 25.  They will face the Duluth Xpress at 6:00 at Ordean Field.  It is the first meeting ever between the clubs.
