ASHLAND -- The Ashland Lumberjacks defeated the Duluth Dukes, 5-4, in eight innings in the second game of the Upper 13 League doubleheader at Lumberjack Field on Sunday, July 20.

Matt Hulmer hit a walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Dave Barningham, who doubled to lead off the inning. Hulmer was 3-for-3. Josh Smith, Brett Hulmer, and Barningham each had two hits for Ashland.

Evan Scherber was 3-for-5 and Jimmy Merling was 2-for-5 for Duluth. Merling broke the Dukes (formerly Padres) club record for hits in a season. He now has 31, surpassing the previous record of 30 set by Bob Eastman in 2011.

Josh Smith got the win by pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Smith relieved starter Mark Arbuckle, who pitched the first seven innings. Arbuckle allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and five walks with four strikeouts.

Losing pitcher Matt Dolsen pitched three and 2/3 innings in relief of starter Anthony Bush. Dolsen allowed three runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Bush allowed two unearned runs on six hits and one walk in three and 2/3 innings. He had five strikeouts.

The Lumberjacks are now 2-6 in the Upper 13 League. Duluth dropped to 6-2 (8-12 overall).
