PORT WING, Wis. -- The Duluth Dukes defeated the Port Wing Boilers, 16-8, in the first game of an Upper 13 League doubleheader at Anderson-Samuelson Field in Port Wing. The game was decided in the eighth inning, an extra frame. Duluth trailed 5-0, 6-3, and 6-5 before taking a 8-6 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Port Wing rallied for two runs to tie and force an extra inning, only to see Duluth score eight unanswered runs in the top of the eighth.

 

Duluth's Jimmy Merling was 4-for-6 with five RBI, and Cody Kurta was also 4-for-6, including a three-run home run to cap the game's scoring in the eighth. Corey Pavlich was 3-for-5 with two RBI.

 

Port Wing's Derek Jardine was 4-for-5 and Blake Reijo was 3-for-4. Sam Schiff was 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a three-run home run that gave the Boilers a 5-0 lead in the second inning.

 

Winning pitcher Jack Nikko earned the win in relief of starter Anthony Bush. Nikko allowed two runs on eight hits and no walks with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched. Bush allowed five earned runs on seven hits and no walks with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Jesse Olson pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

 

Jared Gustafson picked up the loss in relief of starter Jardine. Gustafson allowed one earned run on two hits, a walk, and two hit batsmen in two-thirds of an inning. Jardine worked seven innings. He allowed five earned runs on 14 hits, and had seven strikeouts and no walks.
