08/04/2021 - Sea Dogs Qualify for WBA Playoffs

The Lake Superior Sea Dogs have qualified for the 73rd annual WBA Playoffs. They will participate in the Hayward District bracket at Larry Sommerville Field in Hayward the weekend of August 14-15.

The Sea Dogs received the top rank in their three-team pool that also includes the Eau Claire Bears and the Whittlesey Reds. Their first game is against Eau Claire on Saturday, August 14, at 12 p.m. The loser of that game plays against Whittlesey at 6 p.m. on Saturday while the winner faces Whittlesey at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 15.

Eau Claire (11-9) finished second in the South Division of the Chippewa River Baseball League, while Whittlesey is from the Dairyland League.

The other three-team pool participating at Hayward features the Upper 13 League champion Tony Hayshakers, the hometown Hayward Hawks of the Independent League, and the La Crescent Cardinals of the Mississippi Valley League.

The first weekend of the playoffs has 36 teams representing six leagues playing games at Eau Claire, Hayward, Haugen, Osceola, River Falls, and Sparta. Twelve teams will advance to the WBA State Championship Tournament, August 20-22, at Merrill and Marshfield. 

The Sea Dogs finished in second place in the Upper 13 League, with a record of 8-2. The 2021 season is the ninth WBA Playoffs appearance in the club's 15-year existence. The Sea Dogs last qualified in 2019.
