Lake Superior Sea Dogs

08/19/2018 - Sea Dogs Issue Team Awards

The Lake Superior Sea Dogs have announced their 2018 team awards.

Most Valuable Player Award

Taking MVP honors are two pitchers, Peter Lenz and Jake Lewis. Lenz led the team in value over replacement player (VORP), at 12.84. Lewis was second in VORP at 8.84. Conor Wollenzien finished third in VORP, at 6.59, Derrick Winn was fourth, at 6.48, and Derek Haedrich was fifth, at 3.17.

Lenz posted a 2-4 win-loss record and a 3.22 ERA in 36 and one-third innings. He earned his two wins against Upper 13 League opponents.

Lewis, at 4-2 W-L and 3.16 ERA, notched his second team MVP award (he also earned MVP honors in 2016). He picked up three league wins and saved the best for last as he was the winning pitcher in the Sea Dogs' WBA Playoffs win against Whittlesey. Lewis allowed two runs in seven and one-third innings against the Reds at Rib Lake. Lewis led the team in wins and strikeouts.

Cy Young Award

The Cy Young Award goes to the team's top pitcher(s). This year's award goes to Lenz and Lewis for the reasons listed above.

Rookie of the Year Award

Jacob Becks earned the club's outstanding rookie award. His abilities as a catcher are extremely valuable, as is his dependability. Becks played in 12 of the Sea Dogs' 18 games. He made 24 put outs and two assists without an error as a catcher.

Gold Glove Award

Chris Olson is the club's 2018 Gold Glove Award recipient. Olson led the team in total chances (81) and put outs (78). It wasn't even close. He led in TC's by 34 and PO's by 35. Olson had a .988 fielding percentage.

Silver Slugger Award

Derek Haedrich is the Silver Slugger Award winner. The award goes to the team's leader in gross production average (GPA), a measurement that takes into account both on-base percentage (OBP) and slugging percentage (SLG), with OBP weighted 1.8 times as much as SLG. The result, when divided by four, can be read just like a batting average. Two players met the minimum plate appearances (2.4 times 18 team games = 44) to qualify, Haedrich and Chris Olson. Haedrich led with a .270 GPA. Olson's GPA was .247. Haedrich led the team in batting (.316) and hits (12). Just missing the cut were Eric Pearson (.272 GPA and .242 AVG in 43 PA's), Peter Atiemo (.205 GPA and .237 AVG in 42 PA's), and Blake Bergquist (.241 GPA and .270 AVG in 41 PA's).

Reliever of the Year Award

Seth Anderson led the club in innings pitched (45.1) and ERA (2.98). He also led with six relief appearances. As a reliever, he had two saves and a 2.95 ERA in 18 and one-third innings pitched. His biggest moment on the mound came in the WBA Playoffs, where he pitched one and two-thirds innings without allowing a run for the save in the 4-2 win against Whittlesey. Overall, Anderson posted a 2-2 W-L record.

Mr. Versatility Award

Seth Anderson and Derrick Winn are the Sea Dogs' 2018 Mr. Versatility Award recipients. Both covered five different defensive positions. Anderson played pitcher, second baseman, third baseman, shortstop, and right fielder. Winn played pitcher, catcher, second baseman, third baseman, and shortstop.
