08/02/2016 - Dukes Qualify for WBA Playoffs

The Duluth-Superior Dukes qualified for the 68th annual Wisconsin Baseball Association Playoffs and will play against the Whitehall Wolves on Sat., Aug. 13, at 3pm at Haugen.

The Dukes made the 32-team field by finishing in second place in the Upper 13 League, with an 8-4 league record, and received a #3 seed in their bracket. Whitehall, which placed third in the Chippewa River League with an 18-4 record, is the #2 seed. In the other bracket of the single-elimination tournament, #4 Osceola Braves take on #1 Hayward Hawks on Aug. 13 at 6pm at Haugen. The winners play at Haugen on Sun., Aug. 14, at 3pm, for a chance to advance to the WBA Finals weekend, Aug. 20-21, at Merrill.

The batting leaders for Duluth-Superior are Cody Dolsen (Proctor) (.375 AVG), Bob Baxton (Denfeld) (.333), Jimmy Merling (Proctor) (.333), Corey Verhel (Denfeld/UW-Superior) (.333), Brendan Burnap (Hermantown) (.316), Travis Bartlett (Cloquet/Hibbing CC) (.308), Michael Gales (Proctor) (.304), and Peyton Flanders (Superior/UW-Superior) (.283). The leading pitchers are Jake Lewis (Proctor/UW-Superior) (4-4 W-L, 2.65 ERA), Anthony Bush (Proctor/Bemidji State/UW-Superior) (1-1, 1.30, 2 saves), and Kevin Hendrickx (Brookings, S.D.) (1-0, 2.92).

The Dukes boast a 2.62 team ERA, and have a .240 team batting average.

The Dukes qualified for their fifth straight WBA Playoffs, and sixth overall in the club's 10-year existence.

In the 2015 WBA Playoffs, the Dukes lost a 17-inning first-round game to the Everest Merchants at River Falls. The final score was 5-4.

In 2014, they lost, 7-3, to the Menomonie Eagles at Haugen. In 2013, as the Duluth Padres, they lost by a 5-1 score to the Beef River Bullfrogs at Osceola. In 2012, the Padres lost to the Whittlesey Reds at Rib Lake, 12-8. In 2008, as the Proctor Padres, the team lost to the Brill Millers at Haugen by an 8-5 score.
