08/12/2015 - 2015 Team Awards: Comeback Player of the Year

The Duluth-Superior Dukes Comeback Player of the Year Award is presented annually to players who have re-emerged on the field during the season. The award is modeled after the American and National League awards of the same name, which debuted in 2005. In an unprecidented move, the Dukes executive board selected multiple recipients of the award in 2015, in acknowledgement of the team's achievments this season. The 2015 Dukes Comeback Players of the Year are Travis Bartlett, Bob Baxton, Anthony Bush, Kevin Hendrickx, and Jake Lewis.

As a rookie in 2014, Bartlett played in 11 games and batted .262 (11 for 42) with three extra-base hits, four runs, and 5 RBI. In 2015, he played in all 24 games and batted .400 (32 for 80) with nine extra-base hits, 14 runs, and 20 RBI. His on-base percentage jumped from .279 to .438 and his slugging percentage went from .333 to .538.

Baxton, one of five players who have played in all of the club's nine seasons, played in just four games in 2014 and batted .143 (2 for 14). He bounced back for 10 games played in 2015 and batted .314 (11 for 35). He added to his clutch WBA Playoffs resume by going 3-for-7 and making a diving catch in right field in the Dukes' 17-inning loss to Everest. Last year he made a Willie Mays-like catch over his shoulder on a deep drive to right field against Menomonie, and he hit a first-inning grand slam against Brill in 2008.

Another player who has been with the club since its first season, Bush posted an 0-3 W-L record and a 6.51 ERA in 27.2 innings pitched in 2014. Bush was 5-1 W-L this year, and he tied the club record for wins in a season. His 1.69 ERA in 2015 is the lowest in his 18-year amateur career. He tossed 32.0 innings pitched.

Hendrickx played in 20 games last year and batted .136 (9 for 66). This year, he batted .284 (21 for 74) in 21 games. He had two RBI in 2014 and six in 2015. His on-base percentage improved from .230 to .354. Henrickx recorded 20 defensive assists in 2014 and 34 in 2015. He is the club's all-time leader in sacrifice hits (17) and he's one of four players in club history to record over 100 assists.

Lewis was 3-4 W-L with a 5.21 ERA in 46.2 innings pitched in 2014, with 24 walks allowed and 46 strikeouts. This year he was 2-2 W-L with a 2.77 ERA in 65.0 innings. He only walked 14 and his strikeout total jumped to 85. Lewis pitched the first 11 innings in the playoffs game against Everest; he allowed one walk and had 12 strikeouts.
